Malcolm X

This is a 1992 biographical drama on the life of Malcolm X from birth to his assassination. The movie highlights his relationship with Elijah Mohammed and the nation of Islam. The movie was directed and Co-written by Spike Lee, it was largely based on Alex Haley’s 1965 book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Denzel Washington played Malcolm X and was nominated for an academy award because of his performance in the movie. Nelson Mandela, Rev. Al Sharpton and Bobby Seale (Co- founder of the black panther party) made Cameo appearances in the movie.

Stars such as Angela Bassett, Albert Hall, Al Freeman Jr. and Delroy Lindo also appeared in the movie.

Birth of a Nation

This is a 2016 period drama showing the life of Nat Turner an enslaved black literate preacher who led a slave rebellion in 1831. The movie was co-written, directed and co-produced by Nate Parker; he also played the role of Nat Turner in the movie.

Birth of a nation had people like Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King and Gabrielle Union in supporting roles. This movie is different from other slave movies because the slaves are seen to fight back and start a revolution. Nat Turner and the other slaves are not seen as helpless throughout the movie.

The movie also shows how slave masters also used Christianity to keep the slaves submissive and how Nat Turner used bible verses to lead the revolution.

Long Walk to Freedom

This is a British-South African biographical drama on the life of Nelson Mandela based on his autobiographical book. The movie focuses on the revolution against the system of Apartheid in South Africa, his time in prison and how his wife at the time Winnie Mandela took over and became very active in the revolution. We can also see how the struggle for freedom affected their relationship and their family.

The movie is directed by Justin Chadwick and written by William Nicholson. Idris Elba plays Nelson Mandela and Naomie Harris plays Winnie Mandela. The movie was released in 2013.

Selma is a 2014 historical drama, directed by Ava DuVernay, based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches. The leaders of the marches were Martin Luther King Jr., Hosea Williams, James Bevel and John Lewis.The movie focuses on Martin Luther king.

David Oyelowo plays Martin Luther King and Tom Wilkinson plays Lyndon B Johnson (the president of America at that time). Carmen Ejogo played Coretta Scott King and Oprah Winfrey played Annie Lee Cooper.

The movie was nominated for 4 golden globes and won and academy award for best original song.

This biographical drama is based on the life of the boxing legend Mohammed Ali. The movie focused on 10 years of his life (1964-1974).The movie captures his conversion to Islam, his refusal to enlist in the Vietnam War, banishment from boxing and financial troubles he had. The movie also shows his epic fight with George Foreman when he reclaimed his title.

Will Smith plays Mohammed Ali in the movie. The movie is produced, written and directed by Michael Mann.
