First African Supermodel on the Cover of Elle Magazine this Century
Angolan Supermodel Maria Borges is the only supermodel that has appeared on the cover since Alek Wek in 1997. She will appear in the May 2017 US edition of the magazine. She started modelling in 2010 and has since then worked for top brands such as Chanel, Balmain and Givenchy. In her interview with Elle magazine, she emphasised the importance of diversity in the fashion industry.
She is glad to be inspiring young girls who look like her because when she was younger she never saw women who looked like her in top fashion magazines. In February she became the face of L’Oreal Paris. In an interview, she stated, “that a girl who from the bottom can be an international beauty symbol and be living proof that our dreams are valid”.
In 2015, she became the first Victoria Secret Lingerie model to display her natural Afro without makeup on.
