Libya Slave Trade

Libya Slave Trade

On Tuesday, the 21st of November, diplomats at the UN Security Council carried out an investigation into the recent reports on the slavery of Sub Saharan Africa immigrants in Libya. Pictures of Nigerian migrants being auctioned in Libya have recently surfaced on the internet. Most of these auctions have taken place in Libya’s capital, Tripoli. Some men are being sold for as little as $400. These migrants left their home countries in search of greener pastures only to end up in a situation worse than anything they have experienced.

According to CNN, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Gutierres released a statement saying “in the recent days, we have all been horrified by images of African migrants being sold as goods in Libya”. Apparently the officials are shocked that slavery is not just a thing of the past. I say the world has known for a while that people (especially young girls) are often kidnapped from Africa & the Middle East, to be sold as domestic and sex workers in Europe.

Arabs have been enslaving Africans for over a thousand years, even before the Europeans (in the transatlantic slave trade). In the early 2000s there were reports of young children in South Sudan being enslaved by the Arabs who lived up north. I am glad this situation is getting a lot of attention. This injustice must come to an end.
