Doctors say there are several causes of depression, studies show that a deficiency in B vitamins can  trigger depression in some people. Some foods act as stimulants while others act as depressants. Here are a list of natural plant based foods that can help to relieve depression symptoms.

Walnuts

Walnuts are a very rich plant based source of Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids help to improve brain function and relieve depression symptoms. 80% of the brain is said to be made up of fats. Research is starting to show how natural fats help to improve brain function.

Avocado

An avocado contains 4 grams of protein, healthy fat (mostly monosaturated fat) that help improve the brain function. It is low in sugar and is filled with vitamins K, C, E-12, B-9, B-6 and B-5.

Dark Green Vegetables

Leafy greens such as spinach and Kale help to fight inflammation in the body, depression has been linked to brain inflammation, according to a study by JAMA psychiatry. Leafy greens contain vitamins A,C,E and K. They also contain photo chemicals and minerals. They also help to prevent the formation of cancer cells in the body.

Whole Wheat Bread

They help to increase the production of serotonin in the brain. Whole grains take longer to break down in the body than processed carbs. This means sugar is released slower into the blood stream and the effects last longer.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain folic acid and alpha lipoic acid, they are effective in fighting depression. According to the a Journal of Psychiatry and neuroscience, a high rate of folate deficiency can be found in people with depression. Folic acid prevents the excessive formation of homocysteine.
