Stone Town

This is an old town located in Zanzibar, the majority of homes in Stone town were built in the 19th century. Its architecture shows how the Swahili culture has influenced the Persian, Arab and European cultures. It is the world’s oldest functioning Swahili city and many of its landmarks have been kept in good condition. There are a few interesting old religious houses to visit. Stone town is also known as Mji Mkongwe (means “old town” in Swahili).

Selous Game Reserve

This is Africa’s largest game reserve it covers a total are of 21,100 SQ miles, this is 5% of Tanzania’s total area. It was established in 1922 and has a largely undeveloped and largely forested area but this area is forbidden to tourists. On the Selous game reserve, you have grasslands, woodlands, rivers, hills, and plains. The Rufiji river flows through the game reserve and it is filled with diverse water-based wildlife. The river flows into the Indian Ocean. There are over 350 bird species to be seen on the game reserve. Most visitors arrive via a small plane from the Dar es Salaam Airport because of the limited road access.

Mafia Island

This island has excellent coral gardens and over 400 species of Fish. It is an attractive site for deep sea diving and fishing. The best time to visit the Island for diving is from October – March but if you are going to be staying above Sea level then I suggest you visit from May-October. The Mafia Archipelago covers an area of 168 sq mi with a population of 40,801. The Mafia Island history goes back to the 8th century and it played a major in the ancient trade between East Africa and East Asia.

Lake Manyara National Park

This is located in both the Arusha region and Manyara region. It consists of 130 SQ mi arid land, forests, and soda lake. There are over 400 bird species and also well-known flamingos on the lake. It is a good spot for bird watchers. You can find cheetahs, elephants, blue monkeys, Masai giraffe, impalas, zebras, gazelles, leopards and many more wild animals in the national park.
