Trump vs The NFL

I know most people have seen the video of the US president, Donald trump telling the NFL (National Football League) owners to fire NFL players who take the knee during the national anthem. During his speech on Friday 22nd of September, Trump referred to a player who chooses to protest as a “son of a bitch“. In order for you to understand this whole controversy I have to give you a brief history lesson.

In 2016, a black NFL quarterback, Collin Kaepernic chose to protest the harsh treatment of black people in the United States by the police and Country as a whole. He achieved this by taking the knee when the national anthem was played before a game. This gained him nationwide attention and it motivated other athletes in various sports leagues to protest in different ways. At the end of the 2016 season he dropped out of his contract with 49ers and decided to become a free agent. He was not signed by a new team for the following season and it will be right to assume this is because of his protest.

Trump’s speech on Friday has caused many athletes and celebrities such as Lebron James, Stevie wonder, Jidenna and Diddy to speak against his actions. Trump told fans to boycott the NFL when a number of owners were not in support of his speech. He also tweeted “Going to the White House is considered a great honour for a championship team. Stephen curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn”. The NBA player Stephen Curry voted “no” when his team Golden State Warriors voted on whether or not to go to the White House.

Across the country more people are taking the knee in solidarity for the cause and in protest of the statements made by the president. Please let me know what you think by leaving a comment down below.
