Zimbabwe Military Takeover

Zimbabwe Military Takeover

The Zimbabwean Military stormed into the country’s capital, Harare and detained the longtime president, Robert Mugabe in the early hours of Wednesday 15th of November, 2017. President Mugabe is 93 years old and has been in power since he led the country to independence in 1980. He is currently frail and some people fear his reign will soon come to an end.

The general in charge, Gen. Constantino Chiwenga, made the move in protest to who will take over the country once the President passes on. Mugabe’s wife, Grace Mugabe, is currently looking like the likely successor. The army insists it is not a military coup, though it looks like one. They took over the television stations in Harare and Maj. Gen. Sibusiso Moyo announced that President Mugabe is not a target, only the corrupt officials in his cabinet responsible for the defective social and economic conditions in the country are.

President Jacob Zuma of South Africa claims that he spoke to Mugabe and he is fine. Grace Mugabe 52, and other members of the presidential cabinet were also arrsested. The finance minister Ignatius Chombo was taken arrested from his home. Though the army claims Mugabe’s family is safe, no statement has been released concerning Grace Mugabe and the other members of the presidential cabinet. Citizens of the country are not looking forward to the transfer of power from one doctor to another. The people claim there are high unemployment and poverty rates, according  to the Washington Post, some citizens are just happy to have a new leader.

No civilians have been harmed and many people in the capital went about business as usual. Several western world  leaders are keeping a close look on the situation. I personally think there is more to this situation than we know. Despite the fact that the country’s economy is not as strong as it ought to be, The top officials in the country still live lavish lifestyles. The level of corruption in many African countries today is appalling.

This demonstration by the military might not be the best idea but do you think this is a step in the right direction? Leave a comment letting us know what you think.
